Jill and I were on our honeymoon driving to the Grand Canyon. We had worked with AAA Motor Club, a company that develops trip ticks to help you know where you are going. They had done a great job developing a map for us until we got to this on e point. I remember being at a stop sign. The map was telling us to turn right into the mountains. It looked at though this road went into the mountains and sort of ended. We had no other maps and decided to trust AAA. Jill and I looked at each other and said, “are you ready for an adventure?” Under my breath, I whispered, “I hope this works.”
We turned right, as the map had directed, and found the 4 lane road became a 2 lane, which became a single lane gravel road. At the point we were on gravel, we were in the mountains with no place to turn around. It took quite a while to navigate the mountains and finally we made it to the other side. Had we followed our instinct we would have not followed the map.
Friends, the modern church has been following the same map for many years. All church planters whisper or proclaim that we are going to follow the same map as everyone else and expect different results. The cookie pattern for doing church today is never been God's plans for the church. As we look back to the Acts church we see a very different model of doing church. Friends, I am learning there is no map to the creation of God’s Church. I am learning that it takes following. Yes, He gives us His Word, to follow. Yes He gives us His Holy Spirit, to follow. Yes, He gives us His community to equip and to follow. Yes, He gives us the inner power to lead and to follow one another.
This weekend I am teaching to the truth that we are created to be owners of God's vision to build community by leading to it. I am bringing a word that will lead you to fully want to give yourselves to the leadership of Constructing Community. So come ready to lead to it.
