Like most kids, I grew up riding bikes. Mine was a green Stingray with a banana seat and a tall sissy bar. This bike was beautiful until the day that I rode it into the rear end of a parked car. I mangled my pride, broke my arm and the front wheel of my bike and frame. After we got my bike back from the shop, I was amazed at how difficult it was to get back on my bike. I was nervous and insecure. Ok…I was fully scared.
Everyone of us at times become injured in the game. Our injuries can be physical, mental, emotional and/or spiritual. This week I am teaching to the truth that when we are injured, we can heal and must get back in the game. So often we cry, I am hurt and this or you are unsafe. And for many of us, we work so hard to not be hurt and then are deeply confused when we are hurt. Friends, we find safety by asking for help and returning to the game. Safety is not found in staying in the dugout or not showing up for the game. The Christian life is not safe nor has it ever been safe. Jesus Christ taught us and modeled for us that it will cost us everything….and if we give up everything He will “life” us.
This weekend, I want to encourage you and challenge you to have a different perspective about safety and that it is found in living the game. Safety comes in Jesus Christ. It is not found in our circumstances. It is not found in how we are treated. Safety is found in Jesus Christ. Relationship with Jesus Christ does lead us to respect one another and to do and be the right person. Friends hurt will come. My hope is that we will engage it in the right manner and get back in the game.
