This week we are planning a celebration! I am reminded of the words of the popular classic song, “Celebrate good times…come on!” I have learned that celebration is key to the christian life. Jesus found himself in a celebration at the home of Levi, also known as Matthew. Jesus said to him, “come follow me.” Levi left everything and followed him. Levi immediately threw a party, a great banquet, and invited all of his friends and Jesus. For the first time, a partier, named Levi was holding an authentic celebration.
Authentic celebration isn’t limited to the good times, as the song proclaims. It is the action that Christians do in every part, in every season of our lives; and in every environment we influence.
When you think of celebration, what is it that you think of? Initially I think of parties, the events after winning a sporting event, the milestones of certain birthdays or anniversaries, or even the just because celebrations. Celebrations are most often festive, fun and exciting. Personally, I love a good party.
For the christian, authentic celebration starts within the very quietness of our soul, expressed through joy and gratitude. In the good and the bad, at all times, we can find and connect to the power of joy and gratitude. As we discover that power found in joy and gratitude, we influence others through our actions of serving, love, knowing one another and celebration. It is our connection with this power that we ultimately can celebrate our very selves. A Christ follower expresses their actions in every environment of their lives.
